Wordplay #27
July 9 2009
Emilie Zoey Baker, 360, Nick Powell, Joelistics
As midwinter set into Melbourne, Wordplay fired a warm flame in the heart of it. This was a relay change-over: Geoff arrived back from tropical Malaysia the day before the show (commitment to spoken word if ever you saw it), while Joelistics was packing his bags for a departure to China and beyond just a day or two afterwards. In fact he still hasn’t come back. Fellow rapper 360, well-loved for his work with Pez and Forthwrite, came on board to form a two-pronged hip-hop attack. Emilie Zoey Baker was there as well, always one of our favourites. And it was a joy to briefly welcome back poet Nick Powell, who left Melbourne for Finland a couple of years previously and hadn’t been seen since. He also left Melbourne shortly after the show. So, captured here is a brief moment of stability amid the flux. A little burning light among the swirling winter wind.
A couple of notes: someone clever pulled out a lead during recording this, which means we lost the end of EZB’s last piece, and the first couple from 360. Sorry that these sets are a little curtailed. The others are epically sized in compensation.
