Ben Pobjie, 1/6, Briohny Doyle, Solo

So this was it, the gig that blew everything else out of the water. 160 people packed in, huge excitement and atmosphere, interstate guests, sparkling performances – one of the best shows ever. First Ben Pobjie brought the day alive with his patented brand of bad-taste brilliance. Then 1/6, from Melbourne’s veteran hip-hop crew Illzilla, tried his first foray into spoken word – the highlight of my night was when his nervous banter morphed into an impromptu comedy sketch in which he played both himself and the ASIO officer interrogating him. “I want to call my mother. Just one phone call.” “This isn’t America, mate. You don’t get a f***ing phone call.” After the break Briohny Doyle absolutely blew the tops of everybody’s heads off – aweseome to see hip-hoppers nodding away to a new set of rhythms. Then Solo (MC for the country’s most exciting new hip-hop crew, Horrorshow) absolutely dominated the stage in what was also his first full a cappella set, and did it on foreign soil to boot. We found a couple of naturals tonight. Huge thanks to everyone involved.

[Note: We has some serious problems with the recording gear for this gig, so some of the tracks have some harsh spots and distortion where the mic was overloaded. Watch your volume control. Sorry about the problems. Solo's set suffered the worst of it, and we're yet to see if that one can be salvaged.]
