Wordplay #30
October 8, 2009
Sean M. Whelan, Felicity Ward, PEZ, Geoff Lemon
October 8 was a big night, mainly for Geoff. After three years of organising the thing, this was his last Wordplay, as a couple of weeks later he left the country to start a new life under the sea. Wordplay would go on for two more months with Anthony O’Sullivan at the helm, and this marked his first foray as MC. To send himself off with a bang, Geoff indulged himself with a spot on the bill, and assembled a dream team of some of his favourite performers across the disciplines. Sean Whelan once again demonstrated the dreamy meandering gorgeousness of his poems and stories. Comedian Felicity Ward was a revelation, proving definitively that stand-up can work in this sort of environment. And excitingly, Pez made himself available for the night – one of Australia’s best MCs, fresh off an ARIA nomination and a stadium tour of the country. He reckoned he got more nervous before Wordplay. Cap that list of quality off with one of the biggest crowds we ever had, buckets of gooey nostalgic warmth, and an electric atmosphere, and this gig was one of the highlights of our run.
